Getting sober is no cake walk. In fact, it takes some work to get sober and maintain it. During the time of learning how to live in recovery, some people have difficulty experiencing any sort of real joy. There are so many changes that are occurring mentally and physically that sometimes it can be hard to feel any sort of comfort during this time. If you add therapy or 12-Step work to the mix, you become a ball of raw nerve when opening up about painful past situations. Add all of this up and happiness may seem like a mere pipe dream.
Do the work
Putting yourself out there with a sponsor or a therapist can be rather distressing and taxing at times. Getting to the other side of your pain because you did everything you could to work through it, will help to recapture happiness in an even better way then you remember it being. By eliminating the baggage, you have been carrying around all this time, you will be happy, joyous, and free.
Try physical activity
Using exercise in any capacity is good for the body, the mind, and soul. Whether it is vigorous exercise or a walk, getting your blood flowing and raising your heart rate is a great way to help to feel better. Exercise releases endorphins that will help to boost your mood.
Eat healthier foods
When someone does not feel good they may choose foods that are not good for them. When they say, “You are what you eat.” That is a true statement. Try foods that are known to improve your mood such as salmon, raw nuts, mushrooms, kale, avocado, and strawberries.
Get centered
Mindfulness and yoga are not only great ways to help you concentrate, but after doing any sort of meditative act you will feel peace and calmness which can transition into a happier state of mind.
Get help for depression or anxiety
The duration of your addiction can create a chemical imbalance with serotonin and dopamine levels which in return can create unwarranted depression and anxiety. You may need medicine or a specific type of therapy to help you get back on track. Consider using holistic therapy or a psychiatrist to help your situation escalate you back into happiness.
Finding the happiness that you lost may take some exploring to get back. Checking out ways that happiness can materialize through self-care will make lasting bliss.
