You may hear time and again in the recovery world that you must put your recovery before everything. This may seem like a difficult task to follow, but the reasoning of why this needs to happen can become apparent to those who want to stay sober for the long haul.
Everything that you put before your recovery, you will lose.
You may think that your kids need to be before the tools that you use to stay sober. If you are not taking care of yourself with your recovery as priority number one, you cannot take care of your kids in the way that they deserve. Getting busy in your job as a distraction, will really distract you from your recovery that is more of a lifeline than making more money then you really need. Without being sober, you have a better chance of losing that job because of the addictive behaviors that you might display when you are not in recovery mode.
The gifts of sobriety can take you out.
Often life gets so good, and you will get back the things that you may have lost during your addition through all the work you did in recovery. By slowly losing the gift of desperation that helped you work your program in the beginning, the things that you worked so hard for can get you to start taking things for granted. Perceiving life as too good, can keep you from putting your sobriety first which in return can make you complacent. Being too content can eventually lead to relapse because you have forgotten how bad life used to be.
