Why Do I Have to Go to Therapy After Treatment?

Mar 7, 2018 | QA, Treatment

If you just got out of rehab and you are wondering why you still have to go to therapy, do not sweat it. Therapy is a good option for you to continue after treatment. Although you may feel better and on your way to recover, you will still have to practice the tools that you learned in rehab to use when the times get tough. You most likely will be caught off guard when that time comes, so you had better prepare.

The best way you can defend yourself from unexpected mishaps is to keep practicing using the tools that were effective during your treatment. Some of those tools came from working with a therapist in a group and individual therapy setting. The point of therapy is to open you up in different capacities to get you to be honest with yourself and with others. During your addiction you probably become very dishonest in the ways you hid your addiction. Therapy is a great option to open up about how that affected you.

A rehab stint usually lasts anywhere from 30-90 days, depending on the treatment center. 30-90 days is not enough time to heal from all the damage you caused when you were out there abusing drugs and alcohol. One significant decision that you can make in your recovery is to extend your therapy out for as long as it will take to help you to heal from all the reasons that you thought drugs and alcohol were a good idea to use to suppress your feelings.

Working on rehabilitating your inner child can take your callow, entitled, stubborn demeanor that usually accompanies an addiction and help you to mature in a fashion that will be more influential to maintaining your recovery. Finding a therapist that is trustworthy will make a difference in how deep you will go to expose your innermost feelings in your therapy sessions. Opening up to your therapist will relieve you from the trauma that you have endured.

There are many different types of therapy that will work for people in all walks of life. You may want to try out a few various kinds to see what works best with your situation. Cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, and holistic therapy have all been shown to work for many different cases of addiction. Sticking with a therapy that works for you, can be a positive factor to preserve the sobriety that you have worked so hard for while you were in rehab.
