What You Show Know about Navigating Through Recovery

Feb 2, 2018 | Recovery, Sobriety

Getting sober and staying sober is a tall order to achieve for many people with addictions. That may sound discouraging, however, the good news is that it is doable with the right direction. Many people have a hard time staying sober because they honestly just do not know how to navigate through recovery. They will try to stop cold turkey only to find themselves doing the same thing in a few days, weeks, or months.

Once someone is trying to get sober, they may be directed to go to a 12-Step program, such as Alcoholic Anonymous (AA), without knowing exactly what to expect when they get there. A 12-Step program is based off a set of guiding spiritual principles that outlines a design for living for someone who is in recovery for addiction. These divinely written set of instructions are conducive to showing an addict how to stay sober for the long-term. The model that the program follows to maintain sobriety is known as the 12 Steps to get the ball rolling in your recovery.

The first thing that is helpful in recovery is for you to ask for help. Even if someone breaks their foot, they need help to recover from their ailment. Addiction recovery is no different because support is a key factor in any successful recovery. Find a sponsor in your 12-Step program to show you the ropes. Although it may seem daunting to ask for help, your sponsor has probably been what you have been through already, so they will be happy to help you figure out what to do in your recovery plan.

Once you have picked that sponsor out, you must get busy with your recovery plan. Putting as much effort into your recovery that you put into your addiction, can be how you should gauge the energy you should use to stay sober. Start working the 12 Steps to be able to unpack all that baggage you have been carrying around with you. With the help of your sponsor and the 12 Steps, you can find out so much about yourself and why you were using your addiction as a coping mechanism to cover up the difficult times in your life.

Cessation of drugs and alcohol can set you free. You might be dreading all the work you may have to do, but it will be worth it in the long run because you are worth it.
