When attending 12-Step meetings there are catch phrases that can be heard in pretty much every meeting that convenes. You may roll your eyes and gag a little when they are spoken, because they seem so cliché. Knowing what they really mean can not only help you to learn something new, but also put a little bit more meaning into your recovery.
First things first
12-Step programs are known to advocate a “one day at a time” philosophy, which can trickle into other areas of recovery. You may need to pay a bill one dollar at a time or have to do step work one step at a time. The idea is to keep things in the order that they should be accomplished to achieve the best results.
Easy does it
This a fancy way of stating that you should relax in recovery. Not in the way of being neglectful, but to relax to feel at ease in the body and the mind. When you are calm, you tend to make healthier decisions and choices in recovery.
Keep coming back
At the end of a meeting in rehab or 12-Step program, generally everyone will hold hands concluding with, “Keep coming back. It works if you work it, because you are worth it.” People will also say this to addicts after they have shared in a meeting or to somebody that may be struggling with recovery. This mantra is a universal sign of unity to come together for a specific cause. Some people can take this as a derogatory statement or you can take it as an honest invitation to keep coming back to get solution especially if you have not yet had the ah-ha moment in the realization of how recovery works.
Don’t leave until the miracle happens
When you think of miracles it may lead you to think of something religious, but a miracle is defined as “an extraordinary event that surpasses all known human powers”. This can lend to getting sober. You may have tried endless times to get and stay sober, but something extraordinary can happen to get you to long-term sobriety which cannot be explained to why this time is different from the last. The program characterizes this as a miracle and you should “keep coming back” until it happens because if you leave, you may miss an incredible opportunity.
The idioms that recovery has promoted for decades is to show how essential and effective working a program of recovery can be. Newcomers and addicts with all lengths of sobriety can use recovery slogans to keep it simple.
