The program of Alcoholic Anonymous is one of hope for people that wish to recover from alcohol. The big book of Alcoholics Anonymous outlines a plan of action that can help someone who is struggling with alcohol addiction to find a new journey in life that does not include a life with alcohol or mind-altering drugs any longer. While the book gives a blueprint on how to get out from under the throes of alcohol addiction, it also includes promises that will come true with the action that is taken, which is also known as the 12 Steps. For each step, there is a promise that will come true if you do the steps the way they are intended to be worked.
Perhaps the most well-known of these encouragements throughout the book, is the promises that are included in the Ninth Step. If you were to attend a meeting of AA the topic could be on The Promises, someone may share about their personal experience of how The Promises came true for them, they may be read at the closing of the meeting, or they could be displayed on the wall to instill hope for all to see.
The Promises are found in the chapter, Into Action on page 83-84 in the book, and can be part of the daily suggested reading by a sponsor to remind someone who is trying to stay sober, what they are working for in recovery.
“If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are halfway through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us – sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.”
If you were to ask someone who is working a program the way it is laid out in the book if these promises came true for them, they will most likely say, “Yes!” Find a sponsor and start going through the book. Once you get to Step Nine, hopefully you will be amazed since you are halfway through your step work. Keep up the good efforts!
