For someone who has had a religious background, they may find the Higher Power concept in a 12-Step program comforting and make them feel at home. For many others that may have had an off-putting experience with church growing up that makes them feel more distressed than at ease, they may have found themselves with agnostic and atheist beliefs. A 12-Step program bases their plan with finding your own conception of a Higher Power which means that you can use whatever makes you comfortable to grasp onto.
The point of a Higher Power is solely about the spiritual beliefs that you wish to explore without any religious connotations. When you were drinking and using you were using the addiction as your Higher Power, so you must fire the old management and hire something greater than yourself. While it would be easy to try and run the show yourself, that rarely ever works for anyone because in the long run they usually crash and burn at some point. Giving something other than yourself all the power can be difficult, but you should really give it an honest effort to try and define your Higher Power.

By getting someone that can help you define what your Higher Power is, you can begin to figure out what works for you and what does not work. By having a simple discussion with another person that has found solace in their own Higher Power, you can eventually choose your own conception.
Seek the answer
This may take some time for you to get clarity although actually using some of the suggestions of prayer and meditation can help you to decide on what you are looking for. Try finding a secure spot where you concentrate to see if you get any answers from the Higher Power of your understanding.
Describe your HP
If you are still unsure of what your Higher Power is, you can sit down with pen and paper, or keyboard and monitor, and list out the characteristics that you want in your HP. Once you get your comprehension, you should try to search for “whatever” makes you feel the qualities you are intentional about.
Sometimes it can be difficult to define what you want you in your Higher Power. With being judged for your actions during your addiction, it can be daunting to have a different belief than some of the other people in your recovery circle. It is okay! Believe what you want to because no one should tell you what your Higher Power. Again, this is your conception and is really no one else’s business if you do not want it to be.
