Treatment is a Time to Disconnect from the Rest of the World

Nov 21, 2017 | Treatment

A life of addiction is usually one of chaotic mishaps. Most of the addict’s time is occupied with trying to fill the void that addictive behaviors temporarily fix. Signs of addiction such as overindulging and blacking out can become the reasons that somebody needs to attend rehab. While in treatment, an addict may need to use this time to disconnect from the rest of the world.

Disconnect from the Rest of the World

Once in treatment, this is the time an addict must use to reflect on what is going on in their life in order to kick their habit once and for all. Rehabs may have a period of time to give addicts an opportunity to take a brief break from their life to evaluate what they need to change. Funny enough this period is called a “blackout time”, but it is not the type of blackout an addict may be accustomed to.

Blackout periods are intended to help put some pause in the day-to-day life an addict leads to improve individual prosperity. Change will require some work on the addict’s part which may seem daunting at first, but it should be well worth it in the long run.

One or two weeks is generally the timeframe that these blackout periods take place. The point is to help addicts get settled in their recovery without distractions from the outside world. Withdrawals may still be taking place during the first week or two in rehab. Being in a comfortable and stable environment with professional assistance can help with the process of detox by keeping the addict out of a possible enabling circumstance that could happen in the home atmosphere.

Taking this necessary space from family and friends can allow an addict to take a honest approach to their addiction without the complications of family dynamics that may aid in the continuation of their addiction. Cutting out dysfunction of loved ones can help an addict to be present in their recovery to work through issues that cripple an addict’s chances in recovery. Having the addict focus on themselves without the worries that usually accompany their woes, can make the success of recovery attainable.

The possibilities for an addict to remain sober without relapse can begin with disconnecting from the outer world. This crucial stage in rehab is instrumental in keeping outside distractions from impairing the focus of personal growth on the inside.
