One of the main parts of the equation in recovery is community. You may have been associating with people that have not been a good influence on you. People that are addicted to drugs and alcohol will lower their standards to be around people that will justify their own addictive behaviors. Once you get sober, you will have to find your place in recovery. Building a recovery community around yourself will give you a better opportunity to remain sober.
Find the right place
There are many support groups that can be instrumental in helping someone learn how to stay sober. 12-Step programs, therapy, counseling, abstinence programs, or churches are all options to try locally. Look for something that is engaging to you and attend a meeting or a session to see what it is all about.
Find the right people
Look for people that will support you in recovery. It is important that you find people that you connect to and relate to that do not make you feel shameful for your past actions. Everyone has skeletons in their closet and you should look for people that are trying to better themselves and learn from their mistakes instead of hiding them.
Find the right characteristics
After you have found the right place and found the right peeps, you should narrow your community search to have the characteristics that will help you in your recovery. Having people that will encourage you on your recovery journey is important. You should also look at their morals to see if they are something that you are trying to live up to as well.
Find the right unity
Along with the characteristics, finding unity is extremely imperative. If you are part of a fellowship with people that you do not really trust, you will never completely open up to them in the way that you need to. Being able to relate to a commonality with other like-minded people will make a difference in how you will suit up and show up. Having unity in your recovery is the piece of the puzzle that will get you to keep coming back.
Having a recovery community is one of those things in the beginning that you really think you could do without. Once you get in there and start being part of a group that appeals to your personal growth, you will be so happy that you took the time to research a recovery community that is exactly right for you.
