Tips to Learn How to Meditate

Nov 14, 2017 | Mental Health, Recovery

Meditating can be a daunting practice for some people. Trying to calm your mind to settle into a meditative state can seem impossible with everything that may be going on in your life. Putting aside enough time to do anything that can be considered meditating may not make your priority list because you may not think you have anytime left in your busy schedule to do something good for yourself. Meditating can be much easier than you might think.

You do not have to meditate sitting cross-legged on the floor in a Buddha inspired room, chanting, Om, Om, Ommmm, while touching your thumb to your index finger. Meditation can be totally interpretive to what you want it to be. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be a spiritual guru to meditate. All you need is some time, desire, and willingness to put some serenity into that busy life of yours.

Find a serenity spot.

Some people can be calm at the beach while others may sit on a bean bag in a corner that conducts good energy. Wherever you can take time to be alone in place that makes you feel peaceful, do it. You may have try out a few locations, but it will be worth your peace of mind to get a spot that makes you comfortable.

Just do it.

There are people out there that can meditate for hours on end, but they had to start out somewhere too. Keep your goal short and easy. You may need to start with setting a timer for one minute and work your way up to longer times. One minute may seem silly, but starting with something that is achievable will keep you from getting overwhelmed thinking about having to clear your mind for a substantial amount of time.

Close your eyes and just breath.

You do not have to have an elaborate meditation practice to be able to meditate. Breathing is an important part of meditation and so is opening your thoughts, but there is no perfect technique that fits everyone. Keep it simple and to the point by just closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing.

Get a guided Meditation App.

Take all the work out of planning meditation and let an app guide you to a tranquil place. There are many to choose from, but you should find a couple to try out and do a process of elimination to pick one that best suits you. The Mindfulness App and Calm are two meditation apps that come highly recommended and can be used for both the iPhone and the Android.

Taking time out of your busy schedule to meditate may be exactly what you need to do to pause all the stressors of your day. You will be enlightened by a calm mind and some inner harmony.
