An asset is defined as something that is useful or valuable. In recovery, there are things that become your assets that you may have never guessed would be so beneficial, while others become advantages that you might not have thought that you could have ever achieved. Still these assets are discoverable when you commit to a lifestyle of recovery. The saying of “more shall be revealed” will become more apparent as time goes on and people will start to become aware of how your recovery assets are working in your life.
Your past
The things that you went through during your darkest hours are the things that can help you stay sober. If you keep those memories fresh in your mind, all the while your life continues to get better, you never have to forget where you came from. This process will turn your guilt and shame into hope for someone else to follow.
Your honesty
People that are struggling with substance abuse typically have to lie, cheat, and steal to keep up with their habit. In recovery, you can work through your issues with complete transparency by laying it all out there with a therapist or a sponsor. By getting rid of all your secrets and remorse, you can progress into finding real honesty in all you do.
Your transformation
There is no doubt that you will change when you stop consuming drugs and alcohol in copious amounts. Everything from your skin, to your demeanor, to your sleep patterns, to your relationships will be altered. If you attend therapy or a 12-Step program and do what is asked, there is no doubt that you will be the vision of a butterfly coming out of the cocoon.
Your usefulness
While you were drinking and using, you were probably mostly thinking about sustaining your high so much that you did think about your loved ones and their feelings. To stay sober, it is strongly suggested to be of service to your fellow man. Now that you are no longer under the influence, you can think about doing things that make a difference to influence others.
Your serenity
Just because you put down the drugs and alcohol does not mean that you will automatically find peace. There are tools in therapy and in 12-Step programs that can point you in the right direction of finding the tranquility that you always desired to have. Serenity comes from within and it usually takes a Higher Power to attain it.
