Finding holiday cheer can be difficult if you are battling symptoms of depression. Whether it be taking the kids to see Santa Claus, attending a holiday party, caroling, or shopping for gifts for your friends and family, it can knock the wind right out of you. There are ways to reduce the manifestation of depression so that you can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.
Reality check
There are many festive activities that take place during the holidays. While it may seem like tons of fun, you do not have to say yes to everything that comes your way. You may feel like you are missing out, but taking care of yourself should be the most important thing.
Plan ahead
The holidays can be a stressful time, but if you do not procrastinate you can set yourself up to be in a better place of enjoying the season. Do not wait until the last minute to get together all the things that you need to accomplish for the holiday season. You may provoke more symptoms of depression such as anxiety and stress that can debilitate your productivity.
Keep a budget
Finances are a killer, plain and simple. Only do what you can without putting yourself into debt. Start with a budget and stick to it. There are many fun endeavors that will not break the bank. Use the old phrase “it is the thought that counts” as your mantra when buying gifts. If people do not understand your situation, then they probably do not deserve a gift anyways.
Be healthy
Do not binge on food or alcohol just because it is the holidays. Make healthy diet choices where you can and eat some of the unhealthier selections in moderation, so you do not cheat yourself out of a guilty pleasure.
No need for expectations
You may think that the holidays should run a certain way. Go with the flow instead of thinking about how the holidays are supposed to go. If you are comparing yourself to a Norman Rockwell Christmas painting, you are trying to equate yourself to something that could be quite unrealistic.
One the most important aspects to consider during the holidays to prevent depression, is that self-care is important. Depression can rear its ugly head, even during the holidays. It is up to you to take the necessary measures to eat, sleep, and be merry.
