Recovery can be a very frightening in the early days. So many changes must take place to improve your quality of life. It may seem easier to stay stuck in your addiction so that you do not have to confront your reality – that you are hating life and wishing that you could crawl under a rock to get out of the spotlight of sobriety. You can do this! All you need is a few pointers to help you get through early sobriety.
Embrace recovery.
Most people are not thrilled to get sober, but if your consequences have gotten higher than your reward, then it is time to do something different. Accept that this is where you are and better your circumstances by trusting the process that is laid out in sobriety.
Go to Meetings.
12-Step programs offer meeting that will give you the support that you need to keep you from feeling ostracized by people who just cannot understand your addiction. Meetings give you a chance to bond with your peeps who are like you and your own situation. The recommendation is 90 meetings in 90 days. Take the challenge, one day at a time.
Find a sponsor.
A sponsor is somebody that can guide you through life on life’s terms and walk you through the 12 Steps. Look for someone that you relate to and more importantly has what you want. Not in the way of material items, but what they have to give you as an example in recovery.
Sign up for a commitment.
There are many jobs that need to be done to make meetings work ongoing. Some commitments have sobriety time requirements that must be met, but other commitments such as making coffee, greeting people when they come in, or clean up can not only help the meeting run smoothly, but can help you feel a part of the group.
Get in the here and HOW.
HOW is an acronym for Honesty, Open-mindedness, and Willingness. These three recovery principles can be instrumental for improving and growing in your recovery. Beginning with a little of all three is a great starting point to reach for your highest potential in recovery.
