You have probably been told to stay into today because tomorrow does not exist yet. While that is true, what you do for today can give you more insurance in staying sober tomorrow. If you are thinking about drinking and using all day and do not do anything to help combat the cravings, you may be in more jeopardy of relapsing. If you have cravings and try to use your recovery toolkit, your chances of staying sober have just skyrocketed. Using the tools of the program will keep you in the right direction to give you a better outlook.
Go to a meeting
When you attend a 12-Step meeting you can hear some of the other tools that people use to help them stay towards the direction of recovery. The theory is that you will leave the meeting feeling better than when you got there by hearing the solution that recovery can propose.
Call your sponsor
If you are feeling like you want to drink or use, you should tell someone immediately. Letting your sponsor know what you are thinking, and feeling can better equip them to advise you on what your next indicated step should be to stay sober.
Do your step work
The work that you are doing with the steps is important for recovery. If you are sitting on your step work because you just do not feel like doing it, do it. You cannot feel better if you are stuck on doing what you need to be doing. Work out the fears that you are having with your sponsor, so you can keep moving on up.
Be of service
Nothing will distract you more from your own triggers and cravings then to be able to help someone else, especially since people have probably helped you in your recovery. Even if you do not think you have received any sort of help, just try to help someone else and see the rewards that you get from making someone else’s day go better.
Get spiritually connected
Being willing to go to any lengths to stay sober means that you are willing to give praying, meditating, and seeking a Higher Power a shot to see what it does. You may think that the spiritual stuff is kooky and that is okay. Do not knock it before you try it because spiritual connection is a special aspect of life that you do not want to miss out on.
By taking direction in recovery, you have a better chance of staying sober than just trying to float through recovery. Your outlook should change to make tomorrow a better place for you.
