You may have found yourself some security from your addiction while you were surrounded by the walls of your rehabilitation facility to receive the help that you desperately needed. Unfortunately, the road to recovery does not end here. Now that you have made it out of treatment, there are some important things that you need to do to stay sober.
Get into action
Continuing with aftercare treatment is a must or you could find yourself relapsing. Whether it includes sober living, therapy, or a 12-Step program, you must decide on the best plan of action that will help you to stay sober ongoing. By staying active in your recovery, you can start to shape a new life in sobriety.
Build a network
Find a support group where you feel comfortable. There are a variety of 12-Step programs that are available for you to choose from. Plus, there are alternatives to 12-Step programs if you want to choose another approach that you feel will help you to stay sober. You may find that your rehab also offers aftercare programs for their alumni that can give you some resources to find the group that fits best for you.
If you build it, they will come
Once you get the support group, it is pertinent to obtain the right people to support you. Finding some community and encouragement with like-minded people will go a long way in expanding your horizons. Having people outside of your recovery circle is important as long as they are not a bad influence on you.
Seek your meaning of life
Getting sober opens up a limitless amount of possibilities for you to strive for. Just being of service to those around you can change your perspective about what is truly important to you. Life will take on new meaning in recovery and can help you to find a purpose without having the effects of drugs and alcohol as part of it any longer. You can learn how to do anything sober including parenting, working at your job, going to school, or volunteering your time.
Getting out of rehab may scare you a little because you may feel like you are on shaky ground. Get out there and embrace your recovery program like a boss. You will be glad you did.
